etoile_dunord , being awesome as she is, renewed my writing account for me to encourage me to keep writing. (Thank youuuuu!! *excessive hearts* ^_~) It got me thinking again on some things I had considered for a while that I wanted to ask those of you still about:


What makes you take interest or not take interest in original unpublished works? I have yet to seek out original writing communities (that idea scares me more than fanfic comms...), and this is by no means a crazy plug, but as fanfic readers and writers, I'm interested in your stance.　

In addition to the above, since fanfics that manage to successfully integrate original elements are often lauded for being able to do so, where is your limit in that? At what point does it bore you and why? ^_^

I'd be really interested in hearing your thoughts!

For those wondering, tomorrow's my last day in the states. Early Saturday morning it's off to Japan until next June. ^_^ Intensive language training in Yokohama- wee~! Not sure yet what the internet situation is, but I'll be hoping to get some writing done at some point. Take care, all!

Caved and renewed my account. Maybe then I can guilt myself into getting some writing done. :P After I leave the country, anyway.

That's right. Because I'm a procrastinator on the work I decided I'd do on a Saturday night instead of going out to have fun. And because everyone else on my flist is doing the Post for 7 Days meme and I'm both feeling guilty for never posting and too lazy to do it at the same time.

So, to start, my desktop background is Walter C. Dollneaz, a character from the manga Hellsing, which despite the complete disappearance of my interest in anime/manga still manages to be on my desktop regularly, as he's one of the most captivating characters I've really gotten involved in as I read a comic. Plus, Solid & Etc provide me with a weekly supply of fantastic fanart. I was so intrigued by this week's picture I promptly turned it into the desktop you see here and wrote a drabble on it (titled "bloody boxes" on the left there).

Other things on the desktop include my AIM window, full of friends I hardly ever give myself the time to talk to anymore, and the conspirators in that new bad habit, all of those files on the right for graduate school work. :P I'm currently working on a translation of Hōjōki, a medieval memoir, and "Rashōmon," a short story included in 13th century collection Konjaku monogatari  that was later used as the basis for a couple of stories by Akutagawa and then became the basis for Akira Kurosawa's film by the same name. In the bottom bar, my Jquicktrans program is up because I'm currently (supposed to be) translating and parsing a classical poetry collection.

On the very far right are the fun things: my story file for Resented Idols, including drabbles (his eyes are black.doc) and my timeline of events. Under that is a far more hilarious thing, hidden by Winamp, which is a folder entitled "You should be smiling." It's filled with goofy pictures of the Heroes cast and cats. ^_^

Also, my desktop is almost always this stupidly neat, because I am OCD. :P

Only not through LJ officially or anything. I just got a new laptop and was reminded of our "how the hell do you pronounce your user name?" debate some time ago, and after some encouragement from Janita (etoile_dunord) I decided to fool around with my microphone and record something.

I'm not actually as chipper as I sound- that's purely the post-midnight sleepiness. I think I also said it was "12:15" when I started the post and "almost 12" when I ended it. :P

This is pure ramble.

If you think I should actually talk on a TOPIC or something, personal or fandom, I'm open to suggestions, since I don't post enough and love to screw around with new electronics. ^_^

After a couple weeks of dreadful anxiety and frustrating uncertainty with a number of emails flying back and forth from here to California and Japan, things are finally settled. I am officially accepted to both the Inter-University Center for Japanese Language Studies' summer and academic year programs. I'll be in Japan from this June to next June for intensive language training. Awesome. ^_^ I've already arranged my homestay for the summer and am working on another one. Funding is set with two fellowships. Win!

I have to say, tonight's Supernatural episode was fantastic. And even more fantastic is my mother, who is also a fan, and who texts me hilarious shit during the episode like "I want 2 stop car alarms with my hand. :)" and who calls me on the phone afterwards to squee about the show. She forgot Dean's name in the middle of her ramble about him, and replaced it, without a pausing, with the descriptor "sexy crying man."

"I loved sexy crying man, but I feel so bad for him!"

"...You mean Dean?"
*conversation pause while I laugh for a good five minutes*

"What! I said it right!"

^__^ I was awarded both Foreign Language and Area Studies fellowships that I applied for! Wahoo!! For the summer it's full tuition waver + $2,500 and for the academic year it's full tuition waver + $15,000!

The only catch is I don't know yet if I got accepted to my program in Japan- if don't get accepted, I can't accept the money. But fingers are crossed-- I at least know I'll have the financial backing to live in Yokohama! ^__^

Thanks to everyone who voted in the heroes_slash  awards! I really wasn't expecting Pushing Envelopes to win anything, but hey, life is full of surprises. ^_^  Congrats to all!

I've been annoyed at myself for not taking the time to edit this section and put it up, especially since it's so long.

Just so you know, Janita, I don't have the mental faculties right now to restructure per your suggestions, but I am noting them for if I ever go back and edit this monstrosity for bigger purposes. ^_^

Oh! And thanks to those who have already wished me a happy birthday early! ^_^
